About PLA Filament

Polylactic acid (PLA) filament is a popular thermoplastic material used in 3D printing. Derived from renewable, organic sources like sugar cane or corn starch, PLA is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. Its ease of use and versatility make it a favorite among hobbyists and professionals alike.

What is PLA?

PLA is a biodegradable polymer that can be produced using the same machinery as conventional plastics, making its manufacturing process cost-efficient and scalable. The material is known for its low melting temperature, which makes it easy to work with, especially for beginners in 3D printing.

Types of PLA Filament

PLA filament comes in various blends, each designed to offer unique properties. Here are some popular types:

  • Metal-Infused PLA: Incorporates powders of metals like stainless steel, copper, brass, iron, and conductive materials. This blend allows for post-processing techniques like sanding and buffing, resulting in prints that closely mimic the appearance and characteristics of metal.

  • Wood-Infused PLA: Dyed wood fibers are added to the filament to create prints with wood-like colors and textures. This blend is perfect for projects requiring a natural, rustic appearance.

  • Carbon Fiber-Infused PLA: Adding carbon fiber to PLA significantly enhances its strength and resistance to impact and prolonged loads. This makes it ideal for applications requiring durable and robust prints.

Recycling PLA

PLA is unique among 3D printing materials because it can be chemically recycled. This process involves breaking down PLA into its monomer form, which can then be re-manufactured into virgin PLA. Additionally, PLA can be chemically recycled to produce methyl lactate. In industrial composting conditions, PLA undergoes chemical hydrolysis followed by microbial digestion, leading to its degradation.

General Properties of PLA

PLA filament boasts several notable properties:

  • Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT): 126 °F (52 °C)
  • Density: 1.24 g/cm³
  • Tensile Strength: 50 MPa
  • Flexural Strength: 80 MPa
  • Impact Strength (Unnotched) IZOD: 96.1 J/m
  • Shrink Rate: 0.37-0.41% (0.0037-0.0041 in/in)

Advantages of PLA Filament

PLA filament offers numerous benefits, making it a go-to material for many 3D printing projects:

  • Environmentally Friendly: PLA is biodegradable and derived from renewable resources, reducing its environmental impact.
  • Ease of Use: Its low melting temperature and minimal warping make PLA an excellent choice for beginners and at-home 3D printing.
  • Variety: Available in a wide range of colors and composite options, PLA offers versatility for various applications.
  • Bonding: PLA can be easily joined with glues and other solvents, allowing for complex assemblies.

Disadvantages of PLA Filament

Despite its many advantages, PLA filament has some limitations:

  • Low Heat Resistance: PLA prints can warp and degrade in high temperatures, such as inside a hot car.
  • Comparatively Low Strength: PLA is not as strong as other materials and does not withstand impacts or crushing forces well.
  • Machine Processing: The presence of infill layers can complicate machine processing, making it less suitable for certain applications.

Applications of PLA Filament

PLA filament is suitable for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Prototyping: Ideal for creating prototypes due to its ease of use and quick printing capabilities.
  • Educational Projects: Widely used in schools and universities for teaching 3D printing and design principles.
  • Art and Design: Perfect for creating intricate and detailed artistic pieces.
  • Functional Parts: Suitable for light-duty functional parts that do not require high strength or heat resistance.
