What's the Workflow for 3D Printing Investment Casting Patterns?

3D printed patterns are transforming investment casting, superseding wax molds to deliver complex forms and accelerated design processes without dedicated equipment.

To create a 3D printed pattern, the process typically looks like the following:

  1. Shell, lattice, and add drain holes to the part with a tool like Materialise Magics or Formware
  2. Orient, support, and slice the pattern in PreForm
  3. Print the pattern
  4. Wash, post-cure, and remove supports
  5. Plug any drain holes with wax or cure a small amount of Clear Cast Resin over the hole
  6. Attach the pattern to a casting tree and proceed with the rest of the casting process
