Tech Breakdown: Wham Bam Flexible Build System
Balancing too much and too little adhesion affects how easy it is to remove finished prints. A flexible build plate means that no matter the adhesion, print removal is trivial.
It’s a necessity that everyone using 3D printing has faced; proper bed adhesion. A successful print is heavily reliant on having your first layer at the perfect distance (not too far, not too close) to achieve optimum bed adhesion without being too difficult to remove. This is even more important with resin 3D printers, as the suction forces involved with printing add a new layer of challenge. That’s where the Wham Bam Flexible Build System comes in; their flexible build plates can be applied to nearly every FDM 3D printer and even a handful of resin 3D printers allowing prints to stick extremely well, but pop off with ease when you’re ready.
Let's break it down-
Flex Your Printing Muscles
Traditional 3D printer build plates will usually be clamped to the bed using purpose made clips which means that even if the nozzle can reach these areas, you lose usable build area. The Wham Bam Flexi Magnetic Base can be installed directly to the bed of your 3D printer thanks to its adhesive backing, so you can use the entirety of the build plate without fear of ramming into any clamps. The build plate itself is made of flexible spring steel: a thin sheet of metal that’s magnetic and super bendable, so every time you twist it it will always return to its original shape. Once everything is installed, print on the Flexi Build Plate, lift it from the Flexi Magnetic Base, give it a bend and watch as your parts fall off the build plate without using a single tool.
Versatile Featureset
Magnets are essential to the functionality of the Wham Bam Flexible Build System. The Flexi Magnetic Base is rated to maintain magnetism at temperatures as high as 150°C, well above the bed temperature necessary for even the hottest 3D printing materials like ABS, which works best at 110°C. The build surface designed for FDM 3D printers is made of PEX, a custom formulated polymer that bonds exceptionally well to 3D printing materials when hot, yet separates easily once cooled and flexed, so even materials that are used for advanced applications that tend to require higher temperatures will stay attached to this build surface. For resin 3D printers, an etched texture on both sides of the build plate allows resin 3D prints to bite onto the surface and hold on throughout the duration of the 3D print. The spring steel base even has handy tabs so you can remove this build plate from your 3D printer without getting any oils from your fingers on it, although a quick swipe with isopropyl alcohol will take care of that, no problem.
A Build Plate for Every Printer - Even Resin
Every 3D printer is just a little different, with some having square beds and others have rectangular beds. Even further some have obscure sizes that don’t fit into clean categories of 9” x 9” and instead are 254mm x 235mm. Wham Bam does it all and has many different sizes to choose from, perfectly sized for your favorite printers, like the Lulzbot TAZ series of 3D printers, the Ender 3, the Ender 5 Plus and even resin 3D printers like the Peopoly Phenom series and the Anycubic Photon. Having flexible build plates in a resin 3D printer is game-changing; sharp spatulas are no-more, flex and remove is forever!
